Tozot

Tozot is an indigenous Armenian grape variety. It belongs to the eastern eco-geographical group.

Detailed Description

Tozot mainly grows in old vineyards of Vayots Dzor and belongs to the oriental eco-geographical group of grapes. Tozot is characterized by dense, conical bunches that vary in size, and black, slightly elongated (or ovate) medium-sized berries. The skin is of medium thickness, covered with heavy bloom, for which it derives its name (meaning dusty). Wines from Tozot are granted with a unique flavor profile and pleasant crispness. Because of it’s scarcity, Tozot is mainly used in blends with other exclusive Armenian grape varieties, especially with Areni.

Wine Style

Tozot produces deeply pigmented, full-bodied red wines with an inky purple core and a dusty, almost smoky aromatic character that mirrors the heavy bloom on its berries. Expect ripe black fruit (blackberry, black cherry, dried plum) layered with notes of cocoa, tobacco leaf, dried herbs and a distinct mineral, stony edge typical of Vayots Dzor's volcanic soils. Tannins are firm but fine-grained, acidity is moderate-to-bright, and the finish is long and pleasantly crisp — a quality rarely found in such dark, structured wines. Most often Tozot is blended with Areni to deepen colour, body and structure, but rare 100% Tozot bottlings show a brooding, savoury, age-worthy style closer in spirit to Mourvèdre or Aglianico than to a fruit-forward New World red.

Food Pairing

Tozot's structure and savoury depth call for substantial, slow-cooked dishes. Classic Armenian pairings: khorovats (charcoal-grilled lamb or pork ribs), kchuch (clay-pot lamb with vegetables), harissa, ghapama and tolma with grape leaves. Beyond Armenian cuisine it works beautifully with braised beef short ribs, lamb shoulder, venison and game stews, aged hard cheeses (Lori, Chanakh, mature Manchego, Pecorino), grilled portobello mushrooms and dishes featuring sun-dried tomatoes or black olives. Avoid delicate fish and light salads — Tozot will overwhelm them. Serve at 16–18 °C; decant 30–60 minutes for younger vintages.
